of the budgetary wars that president obama chose to go on a sunday talk show. >> he is doing this interview why congress is trying to do it. very critical of congress and i think this interview wasn't exactly combative. he challenged him on it. >> who challenged who? >> david gregory challenged obama on some points but made $1 trillion in cuts, he also vowed to cut the deficit in half in 2009. that has not happened. >> compared david gregory we saw at the top of the show waving that magazine at wain lapierre. this was a low-key interview. >> meek and weak. i didn't find david gregory, i think he lost his punch over this short-lived vacation. a number of points he didn't press the president hard enough. >> the president gave short answers. >> but there's really no excuse. >> the pomp and the ceremony. on the other hand, and you've had experience covering barack obama going back to chicago, it can be hard to interrupt during an incumbent president during an interview. >> it is. obama had the home court advantage. david had it in that more aggressive interview and now, l i'll say this quickly. wa

think that policy based on fact is better policy based on revenge. one comment on the interview president obama did with david gregory he taped it yesterday afternoon at the very same honor that mcconnell was actually trying to get a deal done. so to me, the president actually wants an argument more than a deal. he could have been helpful and instrumental in getting things done every six months to go through a budget crisis with president obama, he could figure out a way to lead and bring people together earlier. they can't call in mitch mcdonnell until the 26th and complain he was there at the last minute. i think there's a lot to be done to improve legislative affairs at the white house and would ultimately help president obama. >> and said about that, but mcconnell is still is late, he could have imposed himself, and not the way he does it. here is the fundamental problem. leaving aside the policy issue which i know is important to you all. if i get down to politics on bumper stickers, you're holding all of this up, including people's tax cuts it defend millionaires, that's a

obama has not even nominated former senator chuck hagel as his choice for secretary of defense, but haggle taking heat over his past positions on iran and 2007 interview when he said "jewish loe lobby intimidated lawmakers." >> i would have serious questions to ask him, not just about israel, but to me the most significant foreign policy challenge for president obama and our world is iran. nuclear weapons program. chuck hagel has had some very outlying votes on that. >> i don't think he's going to get many republican votes. i like chuck, but his positions, i really didn't know all of them, frankly well out of the main street and to left of the president. >> he is the subject of a new ad opposing his nomination as defense secretary. dana, what do you think? he might not sail through like john kerry. is he going to get the votes you think? >> i think the question is whether or not he is even going to get the nomination given the comments he made. the senate is a club, and they like to give props to the club. senator haggle was not one of the most popular members of the club and t

. >> david, one thing that came out of your interview they've thought was interesting that the nra i didn't think would ever be on, he was calling for forcing states to participate more. if you're the obama administration and you're looking for the nra's help on something, well, forcing states to participate more on the background checks, all of these things that aren't happening, if the nra is going to do that and force these conservative republicans governors to sign legislation that did that, that would be a step. >> andrea, i want to talk about the second term cabinet. chuck hagel did not get a ringing endorsement from senator schumer or -- >> what senator schumer said was really very revealing. if a democratic senator is not going to come to chuck hagel's defense, i think there is serious problems there. >> he did not come to his defense. this is going to be the second consecutive nomination where the president doesn't get his first choice. >> this white house cannot continue to float trial balloons and then not have them shot down. the president can't get what perceived to be rolled
